Dentures vs Implants: Which Should You Get?

Dentures-vs-Implants

If you have lost one (or more) natural teeth, you may be wondering if dentures or dental implants are best for you. Continue reading to learn more about each treatment.

What are Dentures?

Dentures are prosthetic dental devices that replace missing teeth. There are two popular types of dentures:

  • Partial Dentures: Partial dentures clip into place around existing natural teeth while filling the spaces left by missing teeth. They are typically made up of metal or a flexible acrylic material – or a combination of the two.
  • Full Dentures: Full dentures are designed for patients who have lost all of their natural teeth. They rest on the patient’s gums and are usually held in place with denture adhesive.

What are Implants?

Dental implants are titanium devices that are placed directly into the jaw bone. They are designed to mimic natural tooth roots. An implant crown is placed over the implant to fill the smile line, providing the look of a natural tooth.

In most cases, dental implants are ideal for replacing a missing tooth. This is due to the fact that they mimic both the look and functionality of a natural tooth. While this is true, patients who are fully edentulous or are missing multiple teeth in the mouth may want to consider more cost-effective treatment methods, such as dentures.

In order to qualify as a candidate for dental implants, patients must have an adequate amount of jaw bone. If you choose to pursue implants, a series of three-dimensional x-rays are taken to determine your candidacy.

For patients who are fully edentulous and have a sufficient amount of bone structure, implant dentures may be ideal. Implant dentures are typically supported by four “anchor” implants that are placed inside the jaw. The dentures snap into place over the implants, eliminating the need for denture adhesive and ensuring a durable fit. This completes the smile line while eliminating the need for investing in multiple single-unit dental implants throughout the mouth.
