What Are X-Rays?
X-rays are a series of images taken using high-energy electromagnetic radiation.
Some people may question if this is dangerous, and we are here to tell you that it is in fact safe! Soft tissue like our skin and organs can’t absorb this kind of radiation and most of it will just pass right through the tissue. We also make use of protective lead aprons, which provide comprehensive protection against any and all forms of radiation.
On the other hand, bones and teeth – which are on the denser side – can absorb the radiation, resulting in pictures which can be viewed by your dentist. These pictures are helpful in many ways, allowing your dentist to diagnose and fix any underlying issues that may have otherwise been overlooked because they may not be visible with just a visual exam alone.
Why Are X-Rays Important?
X-rays allow your dentist to examine things that may be undetectable to the naked eye, and allow complete examination of the structures below the gumline.
Without this technology, small cavities, chips and breaks in the tooth, bone loss, and infections would likely go unnoticed and untreated until it was too late.
X-rays also give your dentist an idea of the positioning of your teeth to help determine what kind of corrective treatment is needed, if any.
In the past, x-rays were recommended on a more regular basis. In recent years, studies have shown that an adult with no major dental problems only requires a complete set of x-rays every two to three years. Small sets of periodic “check-up” x-rays are typically taken every six months, or whenever you come in to have your routine periodic cleaning done.
If you are in need of dental treatment, or if there are issues or conditons that your dentist has chosen to keep a close eye on, it may be recommended that you have x-rays taken more often in order to ensure that the issue is not allowed to progress.
